TOWN OF YORK, Wis. -

A 53-year-old Madison man is dead following a one-car crash off U.S. Highway 151 north of Sun Prairie early Monday morning.

Sheriff's deputies were sent to the crash on 151 near the County Highway V exit just before 2 a.m. Monday.

According to the sheriff's department, the initial investigation indicates a car driven by the victim northbound on 151 exited at V, but went off the shoulder, down the embankment and rolled several times.

The driver, identified as Frederick Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 28-year-old passenger in the car was taken to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison with minor injuries.

Both people in the car were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Sheriff's officials said the preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were both contributing factors in the crash.
