One man was killed and two others were injured when two cars collided near a curve on State Highway 59 in Magnolia Township, according to the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and emergency responders were called to the area of Highway 59 near State Highway 104 at 5:24 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a crash.
The initial investigation showed a car traveling west on Highway 59 driven by Matthew Kraft, 23, of South Wayne, was approaching a large curve when it went into the shoulder. Kraft corrected, causing the car to rotate counterclockwise and travel sideways into the oncoming lane. Another car traveling east driven by Gregory Schultz, 51, of Monroe, struck the front passenger side of the car that was sideways, causing it to overturn and come to rest on its passenger side, according to deputies.
Joshua Swenson, 24, of Evansville, was a passenger in Kraft's car.
All three men were trapped when crews arrived, according to deputies. Kraft was unresponsive. MedFlight was called to the scene and he was pronounced dead by a MedFlight doctor.
Sweonson was flown to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Schultz was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies said Kraft was not wearing his seat belt, and speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Highway 59 was closed for about five hours while a reconstruction team investigated the crash.
