MONONA, Wis. -

A house on Schluter Road sustained about $225,000 in damage from a fire early Saturday that also left the home uninhabitable, according to the Monona Fire Department.

City of Monona Fire Chief Scott Sullivan said fire crews responded to a report of a structure fire just after midnight. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke conditions at a single-family home at 5311 Schluter, according to a report.

The fire was brought under control within about 3 hours, Sullivan said, but crews remained at the scene until approximately 6:30 a.m. The fire department said residents were home when the fire started and escaped safely; one resident sought medical attention for breathing difficulties.

Fire damaged the second story of the building and the rest of the building sustained heavy smoke, water and heat damage, officials said. The entire building was uninhabitable and the residents were able to stay with relatives, the report said.

Sullivan also said total estimated damage to the building and contents is estimated at $225,000.

The Monona Fire Department responded with five units and 19 firefighters. Due to the extreme conditions and cold weather, units from McFarland, Blooming Grove, Fitchburg, Town of Madison, Cottage Grove and Maple Bluff also responded to assist Monona.

Sullivan said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is still under investigation.
