LANCASTER, Wis. -

A man from rural Platteville who was facing more than 100 charges in Grant County Court has reached a plea deal with prosecutors, resulting in 15 years in prison.

Court records show Robert VanNatta, 45, was also sentenced to 10 years of extended supervision on a charge of kidnapping.

Grant County Judge Robert VanDeHey found VanNatta guilty on charges of obstructing an officer, 40 charges of having sex with a child age 16 or older, and kidnapping. VanNatta pled no contest to those charges. Those sentences are for smaller terms, and are to be served concurrently with the sentence for kidnapping.

VanNatta has been found guilty by Judge VanDeHey on a charge of soliciting murder because of an Alford plea.

On July 5, an inmate told investigators that fellow inmate Robert VanNatta, 44, said he paid a person $3,000 to “take care” of his wife so she would not testify against VanNatta in court, according to a police report.

VanNatta told the inmate the person “screwed him” and did not follow through with the crime, the report stated.

The inmate said VanNatta was soliciting help from other inmates, asking what it would cost him or if anyone would help, according to the report.

Investigators interviewed three other inmates who all had similar conversations with VanNatta, police said.

Another inmate told a deputy he was offered a truck, a four-wheeler and a lawn mower to kill VanNatta’s wife.

All other charges in the other cases have been dismissed, including 54 felony counts of child enticement and exposing his genitals to a child.

Five charges that were dismissed but were read-in during his sentencing include three felony bail jumping charges, one charge of false imprisonment and one charge of illegal possession of explosives.

VanNatta had been found competent to stand trial by Judge VanDeHey in a competency hearing last month.
