MADISON, Wis. -

A man pretending to represent Madison Gas and Electric participated in a utility scam against a Madison woman this week.

According to a Madison Police Department statement, the man, speaking in Spanish, called the 53-year-old woman and said her power would be disconnected as a result of missed payments.

The statement said the man, who called himself “Anderson Tavernas,” told the woman to buy a Green Dot card, put $225 on it, and a service representative would stop by to pick up the card later in the day.

The woman called Madison Gas and Electric and was told she did not owe money.

According to the statement, the man called from the phone number 515-897-7921. Police were unable to reach anyone at that number.
