MADISON, Wis. -

Police said a man struck a restaurant worker in an argument over cigarette butts Thursday evening.

Melvin Donaldson, 55, was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property and battery.

According to the incident report, the victim, a 35-year-old Argus Bar & Grill employee, was just outside the building when he saw a man fishing cigarette butts out of the ashtray. The victim told police that Donaldson responded by grabbing a tall ashtray like a baseball bat and striking him multiple times in the arm.

The victim also told police Donaldson threatened to kill him during the attack.

Donaldson allegedly left when patrons from the bar came to the victim’s aid. Police arrested Donaldson after they located him several blocks away.

Donaldson told police he was looking for what he called “snipes,” or cigarette butts, and the Argus employee grabbed him. He said he used the ashtray in self-defense; however, police said surveillance video did not support the claim.

The victim was taken to the hospital. The report did not indicate the nature of the victim's injuries.

The Argus Bar & Grill is located at 123 E. Main St.
