CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -

A man is facing a federal drug charge related to the overdose death of a man found in the yard of a Platteville home in July.

Police were called to at 2:56 a.m. on July 4, 2012, to a report of an intoxicated man lying in a yard. The man was pronounced dead and it was later determined the man died from a heroin overdose, according to court documents.

Prosecutors said undercover police in Dubuque purchased heroin numerous times in January and February from Alvin Stanley Briggs, 50, of Dubuque. Police said Briggs admitted to knowing the victim and selling him heroin four or five times, including on July 3, but he denied selling the man the heroin that killed him.

Briggs was arrested on suspicion of distribution of heroin resulting in death and distributing heroin near a school and a playground. If convicted on all charges, he faces a minimum of 24 years in prison.
