LANCASTER, Wis. -

Police arrested a man Friday afternoon after he said he was hunting on Highway 61 around the same time a woman was nearly shot driving.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department said Thomas Welp, 71, was arrested on suspicion of recklessly endangering safety relating to an incident Thursday evening in which a bullet missed a woman driving on the highway with her four kids riding in the car.

Welp told police he was shooting at a red-tailed hawk in a tree Thursday about 5:30 p.m. and was unaware he hit a vehicle.

Welp was booked in Grant County Jail and later released, the sheriff’s department said.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials told the sheriff they found a dead hawk at the scene.
