MADISON, Wis. -

The burglary of a west side convenience store in Madison led to the arrest of a man at gunpoint, according to police.

Police were called to a Mobil station at 901 S. Gammon Rd. at 12:39 a.m. Saturday to a report of a burglar alarm.  Officers said they found a door window shattered and a fire extinguisher lying nearby.

A store employee gave police surveillance video of the crime and police released a description of the burglar, according to police.

An officer said a man matching the description was spotted walking near Park Edge Drive and Park Ridge Drive and he was arrested at gunpoint.

Police said Scott A. Alton, 24, of Madison, claimed to be out drinking with friends, but changed his story when police said the burglary was captured on video and pointed out the bar he said he was at with his friends had closed months ago.

Alton was arrested on suspicion of burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, criminal damage to property and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said Alton took nine packs of cigarettes from the store.
