Matthew O'Dell
MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison man has been convicted in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend last summer at a Madison mobile home park.

Twenty-six-year-old Matthew J. O'Dell pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional homicide Friday as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He was originally charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the stabbing death of 24-year-old Craig O'Donnell on June 30. O'Donnell died from 21 stab wounds to his neck, torso and extremities.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the plea deal spares O'Dell the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison. Second-degree intentional homicide carries a penalty of up to 60 years of combined prison and extended supervision. O'Dell will be sentenced in about two months.

O'Dell's trial had been scheduled for July.
