Madison daytime homeless shelter closes

Published On: Mar 31 2013 12:54:14 AM CDT
MADISON, Wis. -

As Madison-area temperatures continue to rise to normal spring levels, Madison’s last winter warming shelter closed for the season over the weekend.

The shelter, located at 827 East Washington Ave., was the only formal daytime warming building for homeless people in Madison.

While city officials said people can still utilize the capital and public libraries for warmth during the day, those who are leaving the shelter are concerned with their lack of options.

"It's kind of a sad day, because you know, once the center closes, a lot of people that utilize the center won't have nowhere to go," said Al Muhaymin.

Madison's City Council members awarded the daytime shelter with a resolution praising its success.

Organizers said police have filed no incident reports regarding the shelter over the long winter season.
