Published On: Mar 03 2013 04:30:59 AM CST

Minnesota 73, Penn State 44: Trevor Mbakwe collected 13 points and 13 rebounds in his final home game as the Golden Gophers celebrated senior day by routing the visiting Nittany Lions.

Mbakwe notched his 10th double-double of the season, eight of which have come in Big Ten games. Fellow seniors Julian Welch and Rodney Williams contributed 10 points each for Minnesota (20-9, 8-8 Big Ten), which also received 12 points from Joe Coleman and 11 from Andre Hollins.

D.J. Newbill scored 15 points and Jermaine Marshall added 10 for Penn State (9-19, 1-15). The Nittany Lions followed up their upset win over No. 4 Michigan by suffering their most lopsided loss of the season.

Minnesota quickly took control by scoring the game's first 16 points, holding the Lions scoreless until the 8:42 mark of the first half. Penn State trailed 34-12 at the break and tallied more turnovers (6) than field goals (5) in the opening 20 minutes.

The Gophers reached 20 wins for the fifth time in six seasons under coach Tubby Smith.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Welch, whose 10 points was a career high, also had seven of the Golden Gophers' 20 assists. ... Mbakwe, the Big Ten's top rebounder, helped Minnesota win the battle of the boards by a 41-20 margin. ... Penn State was held under 50 points for the fourth time this season, all in conference play.
