Gas prices jump in Madison area

MADISON, Wis. -

Thursday at the pump caused sticker shock for drivers in Madison and surrounding areas.

AAA's average price for gas in Madison was $3.39 a gallon, and $3.49 is a pretty common price around the city.

AAA said some of the price jump is because of market speculation, and the rest is because of temporary refinery shutdowns.

That's not a good sign for gas prices since this is supposed to be a time of year when prices are lower.

"The fact that prices have jumped so much so early does not bode well," said Pam Moen, of AAA Wisconsin. "I wish I had better news, I really do, but it doesn't bode well for the coming weeks and months.

The price spike will last through February and March when Chicago-area refineries typically shut down to convert to summer gas blends.

Next comes the summer driving season, which is typically the most expensive time of the year for gas prices.
