SAUK CITY, Wis. -

A former school Sauk Prairie School District secretary accused of taking more than $3,750 in cash in registration fees from the district is given deferred prosecution.

Keri L. Burch, 37, of Sauk City, worked as a secretary for the district for more than two years before resigning in March 2012.

District officials told police they noticed they were short of cash for the drivers' education program and discovered $3,750 in cash was missing between July 2011 and March 2012.

Investigators said Burch admitted to taking money from the drivers' education program to pay her bills. She said she took between $50 and $100 at a time.

Burch was arrested on suspicion of theft. One of two counts was dismissed and she pleaded no contest to the other charge on March 11. She was given 12-month deferred prosecution, which means the charge will be dismissed if she remains out of trouble for 12 months.
