FITCHBURG, Wis. -

The only man charged in the shooting death of an Iowa man last week in Fitchburg admitted that he robbed the man but said an associate shot him, according to court documents.

Bobby Hogans, 25, is charged with felony murder and armed robbery in the June 26 slaying. The victim, Samuel Harris, of Dubuque, Iowa, died at the Fairways Apartments complex on Leopold Way.

Hogans knew that Harris had cash on him, which Harris intended to use for drugs, Fitchburg police Lt. Chad Brecklin confirmed to WISC-TV.

"Bobby stated that he did in fact set up a robbery with the victim," states the probable cause statement filed in Dane County Circuit Court late Friday. "Bobby advised that during the robbery he was armed with a handgun and took $2,600 ... from the victim's pocket after he was shot."

But Hogans told a police detective that an associate, Daniel Owens, pulled out a weapon and shot Harris, according to the court documents. Harris suffered a fatal wound after being shot in the torso, according to the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.

Owens is not charged in the homicide, but he is in jail on an outstanding warrant from the Illinois Department of Corrections. The probable cause statement does not mention another man connected to the case, Roberto Poindexter, who is in jail on a probation hold.

A criminal complaint with more details may be released Tuesday if the suspects appear in court, Brecklin and the Dane County District Attorney's Office said.
