MADISON, Wis. -

A three-alarm fire in the University of Wisconsin Medical Sciences Center at 1300 University Avenue has been extinguished, according to Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth.

The fire was reported after 8 a.m. this morning when fire was spotted on the roof of the building. It was knocked down at 8:44 a.m.

An investigation found the source of the fire in a lab on the fourth floor of the building, according to Wirth. She said crews used thermal imaging cameras to make sure the fire didn't spread.

A water line failure in the ceiling sprayed water into the room where the fire was found, according to Wirth. There were no sprinklers in the area of the fire.

Wirth said extra crews were called in to assist because of the size, age and structure of the building.

Students, staff and one animal were evacuated, according to Wirth. She said there are other animals in the building but they are unharmed.

Firefighters activated alarms when they entered the building because not all of the alarms had been activated.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Fire damage was limited to a small area but smoke damage was spread to multiple floors, according to the fire department.

Classes are not being held in the building Thursday.
