MADISON, Wis. -

Wisconsinites can expect to see extra police patrols this St. Patrick's Day weekend.

The additional troopers will be patrolling local streets and county highways keeping a lookout for traffic violations, especially seatbelt infractions and drunk drivers.

From 2006 to 2010, more than 700 people have died in crashes involving a drunk driver over the March holiday.

And authorities again are urging motorists to find a designated driver.

"It is frustrating because you care about the community you serve," said Chris Nygaard with the Dane County Sheriff's Office. "Because I'm a community member too. My family is on the roads with everyone else, so I'm concerned about the community, just as much as my family and we don't want to see anyone get hurt unnecessarily."

The extra patrols cost upwards of $80,000 and are funded with traffic safety grants.
