A stroke can have many different effects on a person. These effects can range from minor to severe.

According to the Mayo Clinic, here are some possible effects a person may experience from a stroke:

Paralysis, loss of muscle movement: A stroke can cause a person to suffer paralysis on one side of his or her body or lose control over some muscles. Physical therapy can help a person regain some muscle function.

Trouble talking or swallowing: According to the Mayo Clinic, a stroke can cause a person’s muscles in their mouth to hinder them from talking and swallowing. This can cause a person to have slurred speech. Speech and language therapists can help patients improve their skills.

Memory loss, trouble understanding: The Mayo Clinic states that some stroke survivors may suffer from memory loss. Some can also suffer from cloudy thinking or have trouble understanding concepts or making judgments.

Emotional issues: According to the Mayo Clinic, stroke survivors may have trouble controlling their emotions and may also develop some depression.

Pain: The Mayo Clinic says some stroke survivors may suffer from pain in the parts of their body that were affected by the stroke.

Behavioral changes: Some people may have behavioral issues that include being less social, withdrawn or more impulsive, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Loss of independence: According to the Mayo Clinic, some people who have strokes may not be able to take care of themselves or perform some daily tasks.
