SULLIVAN, Wis. -

Winter may be making an extra-long stay in southern Wisconsin this year, but it has managed to fix another problem: the drought.

The National Weather Service said Thursday that the drought that caused severe agricultural damage to southern Wisconsin last year has ended as of Thursday.

The weather service said the wet and snowy winter has provided the necessary amount of moisture to end the drought. The agency said the moisture received this winter should provide sufficient soil moisture for the beginning of the growing season.

Reports into the weather service show that Madison has received more than 4 ½ inches more precipitation than normal since the beginning of the year. Reporting stations in Milwaukee, Racine and Sullivan all report similar amounts of moisture.

The agency is predicting above-normal precipitation for the spring as well. However, they do expect temperatures to get back to normal by the end of spring.
