Dorothy Jane (Hulburt) Porterfield

Brodhead - Dorothy Jane Porterfield, age 94, of rural Brodhead, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Monroe. She was born on June 5, 1918 in Sylvester Township, the daughter of Dewey and Ida (Malkow) Hulburt. She married Carlyle Porterfield on April 1, 1936 in Galena, Illinois. They farmed in Decatur Township for nearly 70 years. He passed away on October 20, 2005.

Dorothy graduated from Albany High School. She belonged to the Decatur Young Ideas Homemaker Club for over 50 years. She loved music and had been active in the church choir and the Saints Alive Singing Group. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Brodhead and had also worked as a volunteer for the St. Clare Hospital Auxiliary for a number of years. She and Carlyle were awarded Green County’s Oldest Active Dairy Couple in 1986. She loved to sew and do quilting, collect salt and pepper shakers and was an active farm wife.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Janet (Les) Turkelson, Brooklyn, Wisconsin, Kathleen (Kim) Markham, Brodhead; a son, Philip (Renee) Porterfield, Brodhead; nine grandchildren, Karen Porterfield (wife of Tom), Sarah (Derrick) Wright, Mike Porterfield, Suzanne (Eric) Teigen, Steve Turkelson, Jennifer (Mike) Nauta, Emily (Nathan) Broome, Scott (Jenny) Turkelson, Angela (Kevin) Geiwitz; nineteen great-grandchildren, Joel (Katie) Porterfield, Chris Porterfield, Mat (Karissa) Porterfield, Charissa and Spencer Wright, Tyler and Flynn Nauta, Shelby, Hunter, Morgan and Jordan Turkelson, Cheyenne and Sierra Teigen, Brittany and Megan Broome, Will and Emma Turkelson, and Drake and Declan Geiwitz. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Ruth Striker, and grandsons, Jeff Turkelson on December 19, 2005, and Tomas Porterfield on October 9, 2011.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the United Methodist Church, Brodhead, with Pastors Ellis “Hap” Itson and Derrick Wright officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Albany. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., at the D.L. Newcomer Funeral Home, Brodhead. A memorial fund will be established.
