MADISON, Wis. -

Wisconsin wildlife officials have approved a tentative plan to remove 16 species from the state's endangered species list, including the barn owl and snowy egret.

The state Department of Natural Resources Board has approved the plan. Now the changes will be the subject of upcoming public hearings before the board takes final action.

A Wisconsin State Journal report said the plan would remove 16 species but add eight others. Those added would include birds such as the black tern, Kirtland's warbler, and upland sandpiper, as well as a butterfly called the ottoe skipper.

The Botanical Club of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation have opposed the plan. George Meyer of the Wildlife Federation said the agency failed to consult outside experts or consider plants for listing.
