Corrections head won't respond to letter from union head

Published On: Feb 14 2013 08:53:13 AM CST

MADISON, Wis. -

The secretary of Wisconsin's Department of Corrections will not be responding to a letter sent from the head of the state employees' union asking a series of questions about the agency's operations and procedures.

Marty Beil, head of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, sent the letter to Corrections Secretary Ed Wall last week. Beil said the questions come from members of the union who work in the prisons.

But Corrections spokeswoman Jackie Guthrie said Wall does not intend to respond to the letter because the union is no longer certified to officially represent workers.

Beil said the letter was "simply an attempt to get some answers to important questions" on behalf of thousands of workers at the prisons. He said the department would rather stonewall than answer the questions.
