Cold Weather Puts Damper On Sturgeon Spawning

SHAWANO, Wis. -

Cold weather has put a brief damper on sturgeon spawning around Shawano. However, state wildlife officials say the prehistoric fish might get frisky again as weather warms this week.

Water temperatures at the Shawano dam were in the mid-40s Friday. Sturgeon prefer to spawn when water temperatures are in the mid-50s.

A Post-Crescent of Appleton report said air temperatures were expected to warm up Saturday through next week. The state Department of Natural Resources said that could be enough to raise water temperatures and bring the fish to northern Wolf River sites.

Every year, the giant fish make their annual journey through the Lake Winnebago system and up the Wolf River to spawn. They generally start about April 25, but this year's warmth prompted them to start last week.
