A Wisconsin Chippewa leader is calling on the state Department of Natural Resources to stop spreading what he is calling "propaganda" about tribal spear-fishing declarations.

The state's Chippewa tribes last month announced they planned to dramatically increase their spear-fishing take on northern Wisconsin lakes. The DNR decided to reduce the bag limit for non-tribal anglers to one walleye on nearly 200 lakes to compensate for the tribal take.

Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Chairman Gordon Thayer said during the annual State of the Tribes address Tuesday the DNR is issuing propaganda that makes it sound as if the bag limits are needed to preserve entire walleye populations.

He said that approach could re-ignite racially tinged protests against tribal anglers the state saw in the 1980s.
