MADISON, Wis. -

Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham is calling for a budget with a tax increase that's 3 percent lower than the original draft budget.

Cheatham released a statement regarding her budget recommendations Friday.

Her 4.47 percent proposed tax levy increase is less than half of the district's taxing authority, according to Cheatham. She's also calling for a one percent decrease in total expenditures, which includes a freeze on non-personnel expenses and staffing levels and a decrease in maintenance projects.

"Despite receiving the largest possible cut in state aid, we were able to work through our budget and plan for our essential work next school year while also being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars," Cheatham said.

Cheatham will also propose a wage increase after three years without raises and spending for implementing Common Core State Standards.

"These targeted investments will help align our budget with our strategic framework and ensure that schools are focused on the day to day work of teaching and learning," Cheatham said.

Cheatham is scheduled to discuss the budget proposal with the school board July 29. The board is scheduled to vote on the budget Aug. 26.

Cheatham said the district will use zero-based budgeting for the next district budget.
