MADISON, Wis. -

The Boys and Girls Club is raising awareness locally about violence against children.

Children at the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County in Fitchburg set up more than 100 pinwheels this afternoon as part of the program, “The Pinwheel Project: Turning Toward Awareness.”

The Boys and Girls Club partnered with the state Attorney General and Department of Justice to promote its new program. It is part of a state program active in 50 of 72 counties and operated with a $5,000 grant.

“Children are victims of crimes. Children are victims of violence, said Attorney General J. B. Van Hollen. “We need to raise the public awareness of that.”

Van Hollen mentioned sexual crimes in particular as a source of violence against children.

“The numbers showing just the number of children who are victims of child pornography, or child sexual abuse, or child sex trafficking are staggering,” said Van Hollen.

Van Hollen has been speaking out against sexual crimes against children following Operation Black Veil, where 17 people were arrested on sex-related charges against children. Following the operation, the attorney general argued for an additional $900,000 to set up a special task force to investigate sex crimes against children.
