BELOIT, Wis. -

A fire destroyed a multi-unit building and displaced two families Sunday.

The Beloit Fire Department said it received a report at 9:49 a.m. of a structure fire at 1111 Harvey St.

Heavy smoke and fire were visible from the two-story building when firefighters arrived. Occupants on the building's second-floor unit were able to escape before firefighters arrived.

Fire officials said one person suffered burns to her lower legs.

Units from South Beloit, the town of Beloit, Rockton, Harlem Roscoe and the town of Turtle were called to assist.

The Beloit Fire Department said the fire had gained much headway prior to the firefighters' arrival, and the fire command officer upgraded the alarm level to a second alarm to call for three additional engine companies from Janesville, Cherry Valley and Clinton.

The Beloit Fire Department said the value of the property is $50,000, and the fire caused an estimated $50,000 in structural damage and $10,000 in damage to contents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The American Red Cross said it deployed two trained workers to assist two families displaced by the multi-unit fire.

The Red Cross said the fire destroyed the upper unit and caused major damage in the lower unit. At the time of the fire, residents of the lower apartment were out of town, according to the Red Cross.

The Red Cross said an adult and two children lived in the upper unit. They were assisted with food, clothing, seasonal garments and lodging, according to the Red Cross.

The Red Cross said that when the two adults and child in the lower unit returned, they were assisted with food, clothing and lodging to cover their emergency needs.
