TOWN OF JANESVILLE, Wis. -

A barn fire near Janesville in southern Wisconsin has killed more than 50 goats.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office said the fire started about 9:14 p.m. Saturday at 4802 W. U.S. Highway 14 in Janesville Township.

Sheriff's officials said about 55 of the 70 goats in the barn were killed, and that damages could exceed $170,000.

The barn was fully engulfed within minutes of when firefighters arrived in the scene.

No people were injured, but other buildings at the farm sustained heat damage. Traffic on U.S. Highway 14 had to be rerouted for five hours while crews from four fire departments fought the blaze.

The cause is under investigation.

The American Red Cross said it responded to assist two families who were displaced from their homes on the property due to the barn fire. The American Red Cross said it helped the families with lodging Saturday night. One household had two adults and the other had two adults and an infant.
