DENVER -

Wisconsin scored twice in the first period and held on to beat fifth-ranked Denver 3-1 Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

John Ramage added a short-handed empty-net goal with 9 seconds left in the game to ice it.

The Badgers (2-7-3, 2-5-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the first period on goals by Derek Lee and Nic Kerdiles. It was the first goal of the season for each player.

Denver (9-4-1, 7-2-1) got on the board when Daniel Doremus netted his seventh goal of the season on the power play at 12:25 of the second period.

Ramage's goal was also his first of the season.

Denver outshot the Badgers 36-25 but Wisconsin goalie Landon Peterson made 35 saves.

Sam Brittain stopped 22 shots for the Pioneers.
