Audit seeks info on UW's new Internet plans

Published On: Dec 18 2012 02:45:35 PM CST

MADISON, Wis. -

State auditors want the University of Wisconsin System Administration to clarify how it plans to provide Internet services to its schools.

The UW System currently uses WiscNet, a nonprofit cooperative that brings high-speed Internet services to UW schools as well as to most public schools and libraries in the state. WiscNet gets most of its funds from the public entities, prompting arguments that it was unfairly competing with the private sector.

A law that takes effect next summer will change how that arrangement works. To comply, UW System institutions plan to discontinue their WiscNet memberships and get Internet access elsewhere.

In a report released Tuesday, the state Legislative Audit Bureau asked the UW System Administration to clarify how it will provide Internet services and how it will pay for them.
