MILWAUKEE -

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it plans to internally investigate a flawed sting operation in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this week exposed a 10-month ATF storefront operation intended to bust felons for drug and gun offenses that was marred by missteps. The newspaper reported that the ATF operation was robbed of $35,000 in merchandise, an agent's machine gun was stolen and a document listing undercover agents was left behind. Several key members of Congress are demanding answers.

ATF spokeswoman Ginger Colbrun told the Journal Sentinel the agency is reviewing the operation.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin joined other congressional members from both parties demanding accountability. In her letter to Acting ATF Director B. Todd Jones, Baldwin repeatedly admonished the ATF for a "failed operation" in Milwaukee.
