A FRESH PUSH FOR REDISTRICTING REFORM

And now there are two bills introduced to reform the way Wisconsin draws up its political maps every ten years. And that’s two more then we typically have.


This past week all 14 freshman Democratic members of the State Assembly co-authored a bill to create a non-partisan redistricting body. The idea is to take the authority away from politicians who have turned the required, census-based district boundary drawing duty into a cynical, opposition-squashing, re-election guarantee. The process is a joke and an affront to democracy and Wisconsin citizens. Not that most elected officials care.


Unfortunately, unlike the bill in the state Senate, the Assembly version lacks a Republican co-sponsor. But we have to believe there is one Republican in the Assembly with the courage and ethical values to support good government. At least there is now a bill to support, and we’ll be able to measure where that support comes from, and where it doesn’t.
