The mother of a girl who was hit by a suspected drunken driver Sunday returns to the scene for the first time.

MADISON, Wis. -

Police said a 9-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle on Sunday night.

Authorities said she was hit on Vera Court on the north side of Madison at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Miracle L. Loyd, 34, of Madison, was arrested for causing injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and operating with a revoked license, according to a release.

Neighbors and the girl's friend said she was visiting family for a barbecue and may have been running to a nearby ice cream truck when she was struck by Loyd.

The incident has parents in the area, like Blaise Foeuppe, concerned.

"Each house you see has a lot of children. People should really pay attention on this street 'cause it's full of children, " Foeuppe said. "If possible, maybe have some sign here saying 'Slow down, kids playing around,' you know?"

The child was conscious when she was taken to the hospital where she was listed in critical condition Monday night. She is in a medically induced coma while doctors treat a broken leg, five fractured ribs and a torn stomach and liver.

Her aunt Michelle Melchor, who lives on Vera Court, said neighbors have been concerned about speeding vehicles for a long time.

"It's crazy to think something like this has to happen in order for these people to slow down," Melchor said. " Slow down in neighborhoods where there's kids. It's really important that everybody just slow down."

But for now, Melchor said the family is coping as doctors treat her niece.

"It definitely could have come out worse but we're glad she's alive and fighting, 'cause that's what she's doing. She's such a strong girl so we know she'll get through."

Police said Loyd faces charges for causing injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and operating while revoked.
