MADISON, Wis. -

Eight air control towers in Wisconsin will begin the process of closing April 7 as part of the federal government's sequestration plan, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

An announcement on the agency's website Friday said 149 federal control towers will be closed and 24 that had been proposed for closure will remain open.

In Wisconsin, towers will be closed in Eau Claire, Janesville, Kenosha, LaCrosse, Milwaukee (Timmerman), Mosinee, Oshkosh and Waukesha.

Pilots will be left to coordinate takeoffs and landings among themselves over a shared radio frequency with no help from ground controllers, which they've been trained to do.

“We heard from communities across the country about the importance of their towers and these were very tough decisions,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Unfortunately we are faced with a series of difficult choices that we have to make to reach the required cuts under sequestration.”

The closure process beginning April 7 is expected to take four weeks.
