JANESVILLE, Wis. -

Six Rock County inmates were transported for treatment and medical observation after they deputies found them acting weird and discovered they ingested jimsonweed, according to a release.

Around 11 p.m. on Monday correction staff noticed an inmate who was acting strangely in a jail housing unit, officials said. Medical staff examined the inmate, and a preliminary investigation revealed six inmates had ingested the plant that has medical and hallucinogenic properties.

The six inmates were transported to Mercy Hospital where they were admitted for treatment and medical observation, according to the release.

Deputies did not find any jimsonweed in a shakedown of the inmate housing unit, officials said. Detectives are conducting a further investigation to determine if any illegal activity occurred, and if the incident was deliberate or accidental.
