Jeremy B. Colberg, 26, of Whitewater, Wis.

ELKHORN, Wis. -

A 26-year-old Whitewater man was arrested and four others were taken to area hospitals with injuries after a crash in the town of Whitewater.

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Department said Jeremy B. Colberg was arrested on several charges Saturday evening related to the crash, including suspicion of a third-offense drunken driving charge, four counts of causing great bodily harm operating while intoxicated, open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, inattentive driving and failure to yield right of way while making a left turn.

According to the report, just after 8 p.m., Walworth County deputies and City of Whitewater police officers responded to a report of a two-car crash on Highway 12. Capt. Scott McClory said Colberg was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Highway 12 approaching the intersection at Highway N, when he turned left into an oncoming westbound vehicle, a 2008 Subaru minivan carrying four people.

The sheriff’s department said both vehicles had green lights to go straight but the minivan had the right of way. The minivan was driven by 73-year-old Felix Yavnoshan of Palatine, Ill. Passengers included Yelena Yavnoshan, 73, of Palatine, Ill.; Igor Yavnoshan, 50, of Wheeling, Ill.; and Olga Yavnoshan, 46, of Wheeling, Ill., according to the report.

The minivan occupants were trapped and had to be extricated by the Whitewater Fire Department, McClory said. The driver and passengers in the minivan all sustained broken bones or critical internal injuries, according to the sheriff.

Felix Yavnoshan was taken by Flight for Life to a Madison-area hospital. The other passengers were transported to hospitals in Madison and Fort Atkinson and Janesville. The sheriff’s department did not have an update on the minivan occupants’ conditions Sunday.

The Walworth County Crash Investigation Unit also responded and the road was shut down for about three hours, according to the sheriff.

McClory said the Department of Corrections Division of Probation and Parole placed a hold on Colberg following the crash, as officials said Colberg was on parole for a prior drug conviction.
