CALEDONIA, Minn. -

The three people who died Friday when their small aircraft crashed in a field near a rural Minnesota airport were identified Saturday as men from the Detroit metro area.

The victims were Joel Alan Garrett, 79, of Troy, Mich.; Dale Edward Garrett, 49, of Berkley, Mich.; and John Paul Bergeron, 50, of Birmingham, Mich., the Houston County Sheriff's Department said.

A fourth person was injured but his condition was not immediately available Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

The twin-engine Piper PA-23 was traveling Friday from Troy, Mich., to the Caledonia Airport in southeastern Minnesota. It crashed about 4:30 p.m., a mile or so from the airport.

It wasn't immediately clear if the plane experienced a mechanical malfunction or whether the pilot made an error. The Sheriff's Department said no one witnessed the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
