Those "salads" such as potato salad and macaroni salad can add fat and calories. Opt for a green salad instead.
Watch what you put on your burger or hot dog! Mayo can add hundreds of calories, but zippy mustard adds few.
Just not a barbecue without beef or pork? That's OK, says Mr. BBQ, Bruce Bjorkman. Grilling allows most of the fat to cook away from the food.
A burger gets healthier when eaten open-faced on half a bun or on a whole-grain bun.
Another low-fat, low-calorie and healthy option is grilled fish. Try salmon, shrimp, swordfish or any other densely fleshed fish.
Poultry, such as chicken or turkey, is another tasty, low-calorie option. Keep it moist by spritzing it with a combination of water and apple cider, bourbon or beer.
If you want to cut back on fat, veggie burgers and hot dogs offer healthy ingredients such as grains and vegetables.
So is grilled corn. Instead of butter, try dressing grilled corn with some lime juice and chili powder for a spicy treat.
And don't forget dessert! Keep the grill going and add peach halves, pineapple slices, bananas and more for a yummy, healthy finale!
