One person died and three others were sent to the hospital after a head-on collision early Sunday morning in the town of Milton, according to a release.
Officials responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident Sunday at 12:13 a.m. on South Highway 26 approximately a quarter-mile south of East Klug Road in the town of Milton, according to the release.
Officials said a 2005 Kia Spectra car was found in the east ditch and a 2013 Ram Big Horn truck was found in the southbound lane, both with heavy front-end damage.
Initial investigation at the scene shows the Ram truck was traveling southbound on South Highway 26 and the Kia was traveling northbound on South Highway 26 near East Klug Road, according to the release.
Officials said the truck veered across the center line, into the northbound lane, and collided head-on with the Kia.
The driver of the Kia, Lisa Furlott, 37, of Milton, was pronounced dead at the scene and the only other passenger, Jessica Furlott, 34, of Madison, was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, according to the release.
Officials said the driver of the truck, David Wartner III, 21, of Janesville, was transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the other passenger in the truck, David Wartner Jr., 41, of Janesville, was transported by ambulance as a precaution.
Officials said fatigue is believed to be the primary factor in the accident and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
South Highway 26 was closed for five hours and was reopened to traffic around 5:20 a.m., according to the release.
The crash is still under investigation.
