Published On: Jul 23 2013 03:45:25 PM CDT

MORRISONVILLE – Jo Ann “Susie” Hirst, Age 60, passed away much too soon Monday, July 22, 2013, following a courageous 15 year fight with a variety of cancers; specifically, oral and throat cancer.  She died peacefully at her home, comfortable and surrounded by her loving family and friends.

She was born July 15, 1953, in Lubbock, Texas, the daughter of Eula “Marge” Anderson and the late George Anderson. The family moved around to several states before making their home in the village of Almond, Wisconsin. Susie attended Almond-Bancroft High School in Portage County where she grew up. She then moved to Morrisonville, Wisconsin in the 1970s to start her family and live out her life.

She is survived by her son, Dennis Hirst and his wife Carrie Hirst of DeForest, WI, her mother Eula “Marge” Anderson, her sister Georgie Howard, her nephews Donald Howard, George Hotchkiss, Michael Getzloff, and Kenneth Getzloff; her nieces, Penny Svee, Sheila Beggs, and Pamela Lila; several great-nieces and nephews; and her special friend and loyal companion, her Pomeranian dog, Tattoo. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn Marie Hirst; her father, George Anderson; her half-brothers Jimmy Carol and Raymond Thomas; her sisters, Rama Hotchkiss and Shirley Getzloff.

Despite all the setbacks and disappointments that cancer threw at her, she fought back with a positive attitude, humor and a zest to enjoy life to the fullest. She enjoyed spending time with family and her many friends in the Morrisonville area. Sue worked as a waitress for many years at the Pine Cone Restaurant located on Highway 51 in DeForest, WI and the Tamarack II Bar in Morrisonville, WI winning many customers and gaining friends with her feisty, sassy personality and infectious spirit.

Sue was a special person to so many people, and she loved you all. She was a strong, compassionate, caring and loving woman and she will be dearly missed by those who knew her.

A special thank you goes to all the nurses and Hospice care workers who cared for Susie in her final weeks. The utmost appreciation and thanks go to Susie’s mom, Eula “Marge” Anderson, Susie’s sister Georgie Howard, and nephew Donald Howard who tirelessly fought alongside Susie for years, making her final days at home, where she desired to be, filled with love.

A visitation will be held at Ryan Funeral Home, 6924 Lake Road, DeForest, WI 53532, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2013.
