Barbara (Lenken) Ferwerda

MADISON – Barabara (Lenken) Ferwerda, age 83, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Ingelside Manor in Mt. Horeb.

She was born on Nov. 6, 1930, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Robert and Katherine (Bohmann) Lenken. She grew up in Shorewood, attending St. Robert’s Elementary School. She graduated from Messmer High School in 1948, and then attended Marquette University, graduating with a BA in Philosophy in 1952. She was a member of Kappa Beta Gamma sorority.

She married fellow Marquette alumnus Gerald J. Ferwerda on Sept. 12, 1953 at St. Robert’s Church in Shorewood. The family settled first in Whitefish Bay, Wis., then in Madison, Wis., where Barbara worked as an administrative assistant for Walter Olson Realty and First Federal Savings. Before retirement, she worked as an assistant manager of security at the Dane County Regional Airport. Barbara was a talented artist, and was a creative seamstress; she had a lifelong passion for horses.

Survivors include her son, Robert of Mt. Horeb; son, David (Judy) of Madison; son Jim (Beth) Ferwerda of Mukwonago; sister Marylou Shanahan; four grandchildren, Jessica (Stirling) Martin and Amanda Ferwerda, and Jennifer and Michael Ferwerda; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Norah, and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 5001 N. Sherman Ave in Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
