MADISON, Wis. -

Authorities said a Town of Perry mobile home was considered a total loss due to a fire Tuesday morning.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Department, along with Mt. Horeb, Blanchardville and Barneveld fire departments, responded to the report of a fire at 1145 Highway 78 at about 11:20 a.m.

The mobile home was engulfed in flames when deputies and firefighters arrived, Dane County Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said.

The home, valued at approximately $30,000, is considered a total loss, according to the report.

Schaffer said ammunition in the home exploded during the fire but there was no concern of responders being shot as the rounds simply explode and do not "shoot" as they would from a firearm.

The official cause of the fire has not yet been determined; however, Schaffer said the property owner was working to thaw frozen pipes before the blaze.

Schaffer said the sheriff’s department is reminding citizens to use caution when thawing frozen pipes, given the extremely cold temperatures recently.

Using an open flame to thaw pipes can be extremely dangerous, Schaffer said. Other options to thaw pipes are encouraged, including using heat tape, hot water or a hair dryer. The alternative methods may take longer, but they are far less dangerous, Schaffer said.

Schaffer said a barn fire in the Town of Montrose Tuesday morning may be connected to thawing frozen pipes.
